Column
A column is a supportive pillar used in building construction which can also be used for decorative purposes. Columns have been an integral part of general construction for centuries, and the ancient Egyptians and Romans used them as supportive structures for bulky architectural elements. They were frequently used in temples and giant buildings with inscriptions and images painted on them. In earlier times, columns were created with a massive piece of rock or numerous stones piled together.
While columns are still used as supportive elements, they are also commonly used to enhance the decoration of several buildings. Today, columns are constructed using different materials such as plaster, wood, and composite materials. They may either be simplistic or quite elaborate. Plantation style homes often use simple columns while more sophisticated pillars can be seen in mansions and large buildings. Columns are also used interior decoration and support.
