Miter
A miter refers to a tool used to obtain controlled and precise cuts. Miter joint also describes the existence of such cuts for obtaining a practical lap joint. However, a miter may also refer to a device that helps woodworkers to make precise cuts. The contextual usage of the word should help in figuring out which of the two applications of the word is meant. When used in association to a lap joint, it is often observed in conversations between expert woodworkers.
The most common use of the term is in reference to a saw. In this case, the word miter refers to a jig which a flat saw is put into to help a woodworker saw wood at accurate angles every time. Most experts now make use of electricity powered miter saws which is a circular saw blade that is firmly attached to an which is normally spring returned and pulled down to cut the wood. The term shouldn't be confused with a similar tool; a radial arm used to obtain similar cutting styles.
