Soffit
A soffit refers to the area between the ceiling and the top of wall cabinets. A soffit can also be called the bulkhead. The soffit spans the entire area between the top of wall cabinets and the ceiling. It often accommodates and conceals vents, wires, and pipes. A soffit can be made of stainless steel or more commonly a drywall.
Certain soffits contain elements of decoration such as paint, wallpaper, and even plate racks. It can sometimes be tempting to remove the soffit in order to extend the cabinet storage space. This can only be considered if the soffit lacks electrical elements that often extend throughout the entire kitchen. Otherwise, the soffit can be removed to create extra storage space in the room.
